U.S. Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, both D-Va., have joined 12 Senate colleagues in introducing legislation that would repeal and refund President Donald Trump’s newest tariffs and limit presidential authority to impose tariffs.
The End Trump’s Tariff Tax Act would apply to Trump’s newest global tariffs of 10% to 12.5% and a 50% tariff on $20 billion worth of imports from Canada, according to the senators’ office.
Warner and Kaine said the tariffs have increased costs for American families, small businesses and farmers.
“From escalating trade wars to costly conflicts abroad, the president’s reckless policies are driving up costs and making it harder for Virginians to make ends meet,” the senators said. “The data is clear: American families, small businesses, and farmers are footing the bill for Trump’s chaotic tariffs.”
The bill also would repeal the authorities Trump has used to impose tariffs.
Warner and Kaine previously introduced legislation requiring refunds, with interest, of tariffs they described as illegal after the U.S. Supreme Court struck them down. They also led bipartisan legislation to repeal tariffs on Canada imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. That measure passed the Senate and a version later passed the House, according to the senators.
