More than 100 animals found new homes during the second Mega Adoption Event, held at the Berglund Center in Roanoke and hosted by Angels of Assisi.
The event brought together animal shelters and rescue organizations from across the region, including the Martinsville-Henry County SPCA, which brought dogs and cats in hopes of finding them permanent homes.
By the end of the event, 129 animals had been adopted. The Martinsville-Henry County SPCA celebrated 12 adoptions.
“We ended up with 12 adoptions!” Chief Operations Officer Catherine Gupton said.
Among the pets finding homes was Willow, a longtime resident of the Martinsville-Henry County SPCA who was adopted after waiting for her forever family.
The event featured a variety of adoptable animals. The Roanoke Valley SPCA offered free, on-the-spot adoptions, while the RVA Street Bunny Society introduced visitors to rabbits available for adoption. Animal-related vendors also participated, and admission was free.
Participating organizations included the Franklin County VA Animal Shelter and Friends of Franklin County Animal Shelter, Franklin County Humane Society Planned Pethood & Adoption Center, Friends of Bedford County Animal Shelter, Martinsville-Henry County SPCA, Regional Center for Animal Care & Protection, RVA Street Bunny Society, Roanoke Valley SPCA, City of Salem Animal Shelter, Bedford Humane Society, SPCA of Pittsylvania County and Star City Cat Rescue.
Although many animals found homes, some are still waiting.
Felix, a 1½-year-old dog who attended the event, has not yet been adopted. Shelter officials said he does well with children and is still looking for a family.
