Twelve local small businesses were recently awarded assistance through the BRIEFcase program offered by the Martinsville-Henry County Economic Development Corporation (MHC EDC).
An acronym for Business Relocation Incentive and Expansion Fund, a portion of this program caters to existing local businesses that are purchasing taxable equipment or expanding their facility to add to the local tax base.
This year, the BRIEFcase program provided grants totaling over $9,700 to 12 local small businesses for specific capital investment projects:
ActivWall Systems
BR Superior Concrete Enterprises LLC
Bassett Office Supply
CC Rider Painting & Mechanical
East Coast Horseshoeing School
Happy Feet Early Learning & Child Center
Ray Hollingsworth Dance & Arts Studio
Ronbuilt
Scuffle Hill Brewing Company
Starling Cards & Comics
Tammy’s Grill LLC
Third Shift Coffee
The EDC’s Business Development Director Valerie Harper explained that capital investment — even on a small scale — helps power economic growth in a community. According to Harper, when local businesses purchase new equipment, it strengthens the tax base and can open the door to additional sales and new jobs. She added that the EDC is optimistic this funding support will help keep these small businesses continue to grow.
