Andy Doss, President of the Colonel George Waller Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, recently delivered a special presentation at the annual Nolen Family Reunion, held at Floyd Baptist Church on the first Saturday of each June.
Doss spoke on the topic of local militia organization in early Virginia, offering insight into the formation of Floyd County from Montgomery County and the structure of regional militia service during the 18th and early 19th centuries. His lecture highlighted the duties of early militia soldiers, including clothing requirements and the ways in which counties organized and maintained their military units.
To conclude the event, Doss led the audience outside for a live demonstration of musket firing, providing an engaging and memorable visual for attendees of all ages.
In addition to his role with the SAR, Doss serves on the Board of the Martinsville-Henry County Historical Society. He can be reached at genealogy@vt.edu for inquiries about local American Revolution history, Bassett history, or speaking engagements.
