Saturday, July 11

Brenda Riggins Memorial Blood Drive: Those interested in scheduling an appointment may call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or search sponsor code Brenda at redcrossblood.org. Walk-ins are welcome; appointments have priority. The Red Cross is offering free antibody testing of all successful donors for COVID-19. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Stanleytown Elementary School, 74 Edgewood Dr, Stanleytown.

The Community Fellowship: Back2School Drive Registration from 9 a.m. until noon. Students must be present to register to receive new socks, shoes, backpacks and school supplies that will be distributed on Aug. 1. Registration will take place at: The Community Fellowship, First Baptist Ridgeway, Mercy Crossing, Albert Harris Elementary School, Fairway Baptist Church, Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, Hillcrest Baptist Church, Kearfott Memorial Baptist Church, and Stanleytown Amazing Grace Baptist Church.

 

Friday, July 17

Franklin County Parks & Recreation: Franklin County Parks & Recreation present Concerts By Canoe at Twin Ridge Recreation Area on Philpott Lake Friday, July 17, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. This event is free and features the Harwell Grice Band performing on a floating stage to a floating audience. Bring your canoe, kayak, SUP, tube or float and paddle your way to a front-row seat for this one-of-a-kind event. Food truck will be on-site at 5 p.m. Music begins at 6:30 p.m. Motorboats are asked to use the Salthouse Branch Recreation Area for lake access. Non-motorized boats may use Twin Ridge Recreation Area. Life jackets are required for all watercraft. Tubes and life jackets will be provided free of charge on a first-come, first serve basis due to limited supply. Mountain Laurel Trails: The Southern Classic MTB Series will travel to beautiful Ridgeway, VA for the Annual Sledgehammer race on July 18, 2020, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The race is the final race in the USA Cycling Virginia State Championship Series. Racers must be licensed by USA Cycling. One day licenses are available for $10 at registration. Expert payout up to $1,000 cash. 100% payout (Based on racer turnout). Onsite registration $10 extra. Monday, July 20

College Board to meet Monday

The Patrick Henry Community College Board will meet via Zoom on Monday, July 20, at 1 p.m.

This is a public meeting, but the board will not receive public comment.

Tuesday, July 21

The Community Fellowship: Back2School Drive Registration from 6-8 p.m. Students must be present to register to receive new socks, shoes, backpacks and school supplies on Aug. 1. Saturday, July 25

Dan River Basin Association: Volunteers needed for Spencer Penn Trail Work Day. Volunteers will move large metal debris (angle and sheet metal) from the trail to the adjoining woods; cut dead trees that are possible fall hazards and remove from trail; clean the trail of trash and other debris; prune limbs as necessary if overhanging trail and cut all rose bushes; repair bridge (wood is rotting) and steps leading to bridge; mow or weed-whack a path from the bridge; build raised flower boxes; plant flowers and landscape. DRBA will supply building materials, we have limited gloves and some tools. Volunteers are asked to bring tools, if possible — gloves, mower, weed whackers, reciprocating saw, metal cutting blades, pruners, rakes, shovels or torch. Dress appropriately for the heat and high grass/woods. If you plan to attend the trail workday, email drba.nc@danriver.org with “Spencer Penn TRAIL” in the subject line, with name and phone number.
