Application period opens May 4 for senior’s nutrition benefit

Virginia’s Farm Market Fresh For Seniors (also known as the Senior Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program) is available through Southern Area Agency on Aging. Eligible seniors’ may receive a $50 Benefit Shopping Card or a $50 Digital Benefit that can be used to purchase locally-grown fresh fruits, vegetables and cut herbs at participating Farmer’s Markets.

The number of people who can participate is limited. Beginning on Monday May 4, the SAAA will take applications over the phone and in person. Applications are first come first serve.

The agency will continue to take applications throughout the following week(s), while the supply of the benefit lasts.

You may qualify to participate if:

you are (or will become) 60 years of age or older on or before June 1, 2026, and

you are a resident of Patrick Henry Franklin or Pittsylvania county, or the city of Martinsville or Danville, and

you do not live with and are not an immediate family member of the farmer who grows the produce, and

you have a gross monthly household income that does not exceed the income requirements of the program.

Individuals and couples who wish to apply for the $50 Benefit must contact Southern Area Agency on Aging at 276-632-6442 or toll-free at 1-800-468-4571.

Beginning May 4, and continuing as long as the supply of the $50 benefit lasts, applicants must be prepared to certify total gross monthly household income information when applying over the phone or in person.
