Tammy’s Grill hosted its first Wing Mania eating competition Sept. 19 in the Clock Tower parking lot.
The event featured Wing King and Wing Queen divisions. Contestants had 10 minutes to eat as many wings as possible, with the top finisher in each division named champion.
Michael Ortiz of Axton was named Wing King, while Tabitha Bowman was named Wing Queen. Each winner received a championship belt and a $250 cash prize.
Contestants entered to songs of their choice played by local DJ Smiley. Comedian Tim Shropshire served as master of ceremonies.
Ortiz said he ate “too many” wings during the contest. He said the wings were good and that walking out before the competition was the only part that made him nervous.
Bowman said her husband encouraged her to enter.
“My husband said, ‘You can eat wings like a barbarian, so you need to get over there and do that,’” Bowman said.
Food trucks and vendors also were set up at the event.
Tammy’s Grill owner Naquias Johnson said he was pleased with the competition and hopes to expand it in future years.
