Mike Ward, Director of Regulatory Compliance and Technical Applications for the Henry County Public Service Authority (PSA), has received the William D. Hatfield Award for outstanding performance and professionalism in the operation of a wastewater treatment facility.
Ward received the award during the 2026 Virginia Water Environment Association (VWEA) conference. The award recognizes wastewater treatment professionals who demonstrate excellence in plant operations, maintenance, efficiency, safety and professionalism, as well as a commitment to advancing the wastewater treatment profession.
The award is presented through the Water Environment Federation and its member organizations, including VWEA. Founded in 1947, VWEA is a nonprofit technical and educational organization dedicated to advancing water quality and the water environment through professional development, education and training for water and wastewater professionals.
“Receiving the William D. Hatfield Award is a tremendous honor, but I see it as a reflection of the people I have had the opportunity to work with throughout my career,” Ward said. “Wastewater treatment is an important responsibility that often happens behind the scenes, but the work we do has a direct impact on public health, our environment and the quality of life in our community.”
PSA General Manager Dale Wagoner said the award reflects Ward’s technical knowledge, professionalism and dedication to the organization.
“Mike has demonstrated an exceptional level of knowledge and professionalism throughout his career with the Public Service Authority,” Wagoner said. “His work requires a tremendous amount of technical expertise and attention to detail, along with a commitment to doing things the right way. This award is a well-deserved recognition of Mike’s contributions to the PSA and to the wastewater profession.”
The award is named for Dr. William D. Hatfield, a longtime leader in the water pollution control profession who served as superintendent of the Decatur, Illinois Sanitary District and as president of the Water Environment Federation. The award considers a range of professional responsibilities, including effective plant operation and reporting, identifying opportunities to improve treatment efficiency and the economy of operations, maintaining positive relationships with the public and advancing knowledge within the wastewater profession.
