VDOT offers new state transportation map
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is offering a newly updated Official State Transportation Map for travelers planning fall trips across the commonwealth.
Free printed copies of the map may be ordered through VDOT’s website or picked up at Virginia welcome centers and safety rest areas. Copies also may be requested from the Virginia Tourism Corporation.
VDOT said the printed map can serve as a backup when cell service is unavailable or a phone battery dies, and can provide travelers with a broader view of routes and destinations.
The agency also is reminding motorists to use caution during fall travel, particularly as increased traffic, changing weather conditions and shorter daylight hours affect driving.
Drivers should avoid stopping or parking along roadways to view or photograph fall foliage and instead use designated parking areas. VDOT also advises motorists to slow down on winding or leaf-covered roads and watch for pedestrians, bicyclists and wildlife, particularly around dawn and dusk.
Wet leaves can make roadways slippery and obscure pavement markings. Motorists also should check their vehicle’s brakes, windshield wipers, tires and lights before traveling.
Travelers can check road conditions, traffic, construction zones and other information through VDOT’s 511 system at 511.vdot.virginia.gov or through the free Virginia 511 mobile app.
