For nearly 50 years, Henry County Senior Services has helped older adults remain independent by providing transportation to essential medical appointments, grocery shopping, and nutrition programs for residents who no longer have reliable transportation.
The program, which has served the community since 1978, is available to qualifying Henry County residents age 60 and older who do not have dependable transportation to reach important destinations. Whether because of financial circumstances, limited mobility, or the absence of nearby family members, many older adults rely on the service to access healthcare and other necessities.
In addition to transportation for medical appointments throughout Henry County and the City of Martinsville, the program offers transportation to grocery stores, pharmacies, banks, post offices, and nutrition sites, where participants can enjoy a meal and opportunities for social interaction.
“Many older adults in our community no longer have family nearby or the ability to drive themselves where they need to go,” said Ashley Mundy, Director of Henry County Senior Services. “This program helps them get to essential appointments and services without the added financial burden of paying for private transportation. It allows people to maintain their independence and continue living active, healthy lives.”
Transportation is provided Monday through Thursday, with medical appointments generally scheduled between 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Participants are asked to schedule appointments at least seven business days in advance whenever possible. Drivers provide door-to-door service, picking participants up from their homes or other qualifying residences and returning them safely after their appointments.
This service is This service is at no cost to eligible participants due to funding from the Older Americans Act; however, this service is donation-based. All donations are highly encouraged and are used to offset fuel and vehicle maintenance expenses.
Registering for the program is simple. Interested residents must complete the enrollment process over the phone by answering a few basic eligibility questions. No in-person visit or paperwork is required.
Henry County Senior Services is currently accepting new participants and encourages eligible older adults, as well as family members, caregivers, neighbors, churches, healthcare providers, and community organizations, to help spread the word to anyone who may benefit from the service.
