Enjoy a free self-guided tour of Piedmont Arts’ current exhibits during Art at Happy Hour on Thursday, October 8, from 5 to 7 p.m., at the museum.

Reni Gower, co-curator of The Garden, will lead a Zoom discussion of the exhibit beginning at 5:45 p.m. Guests can talk virtually with Gower and other exhibiting artists.

The Garden, co-curated by Gower and Jorge Benitez, features work by eight artists from across the U.S. Throughout time, the garden has provided sustenance and pleasure in both corporeal and spiritual ways. As in Milton’s Paradise Lost or Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights to Monet’s Giverny or Thoreau’s Walden Pond, artists have often portrayed the garden as an ever-evolving and fertile metaphor for life colored by contrasts. Humble or grandiose; cultivated or wild; lush or arid; ornamental or medicinal; secret or shared; the garden protects and provides as much as it provokes and stimulates. No matter its form during this time of anxiety and uncertainty, The Garden offers a much-needed refuge and heartening reprieve.

Journey, featuring work by Charlie Knighton will be on display in the Lynwood Artists Gallery. Knighton’s exhibit is, in effect, a journey on two plains: a journey from woodworking to painting; and the artistic interpretation of Knighton’s physical journeys across the country and world. Knighton’s work is ever-evolving and his artistic process adapts with each new journey upon which he embarks.

Votes for Women: A Portrait of Persistence, a poster exhibition celebrating the centennial of women’s suffrage, is on display in the Schottland Gallery. This exhibit is organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service in collaboration with the National Portrait Gallery. This project received support from the Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative.

Art at Happy Hour is free and open to the public. Complimentary refreshments provided by the Piedmont Arts Guild. Please RSVP attendance by calling (276) 632.3221 or online at PiedmontArts.org.

Exhibits will be on display through October 10. Exhibit admission is always free.
