The Martinsville School Board heard a student’s request to reconsider its dress code and approved several policy updates during its meeting.
The board also appointed Ja’Corian Turner as the new student school board representative.
Several policies were updated for language clarity and to expand parental rights, including KKA — Service Animals in Public Schools; KP — Parental Rights and Responsibilities; JHCD — Administering Medicines to Students; JFCA — Teacher Removal of Students From Class; and GBB — Prohibition of Bullying and Abusive Work Environments.
Veronica Smith, a student, asked the board to allow leggings in schools.
“Leggings are a staple of most girls’ wardrobes and are sometimes the only thing that they might own. Everyone’s body develops at a different age, and policing an article of clothing that will fit differently on everybody is not a valid reason. When someone is dress-coded or sent home, how are they supposed to learn if they aren’t in the classroom?”
