The 2025 Outstanding Military Veteran Award was presented to John A. Rehder during a Veterans Day ceremony held Tuesday at the HJDB Event Center in Bassett.

“The individual we recognize today has lived a life of quiet leadership and consistent service. He spent

nine years in the U.S. Army Reserve, attaining the rank of sergeant first class. Over the course of his military career, he filled many roles,” said Henry County Board of Supervisors Horsepasture District Debra Buchanan.

“His commitment to service didn’t stop when he took off the uniform. In fact, you could say that was just the beginning,” Buchanan said. “He’s been a Jaycee member, a Cub Scout adviser and committee chairman for Pack 188, and has served as an election officer for the past 10 years, helping ensure the integrity of our democratic process. He’s also served his community as a member of the Ridgeway Town Council and currently as vice chairman of the Ridgeway Zoning Board.”

“It means a whole lot to me because I am proud of my American Legion Post 42 — proud of the work that I do for them and proud that I have served,” Rehder told rbs news now after the ceremony.

The event’s guest speaker, retired Army Col. Bob Dunwoody, delivered the keynote address, focusing on the importance of mental health and the strides made in helping veterans.

“Federal and local initiatives are also making strides in addressing veteran homelessness, offering hope and stability to those who have given so much,” Dunwoody said.

“We must listen and learn. Many veterans carry stories, insights, and burdens from their service that are not always visible,” he said. “Taking the time to sit down with them — and with their families — can mean the world. It reminds them that they are not alone and that their experiences matter.”

“There are too many suicides that occur because someone hasn’t paid attention,” he said. “If a veteran would be the one to save the one from a suicide, then that’s what it would be about.”

Other awards were presented to John R. Redd, a World War II Army veteran and to Charles Howlett, who was named Veteran of the Year.

The ceremony is held annually to shine a light on veterans and honor their service and sacrifice.
