Red Cross declares national blood crisis

The American Red Cross is urging people to donate blood immediately after declaring a national blood crisis for only the second time in its history.

The organization said blood donations have fallen to a four-year summer low, with supplies unable to keep pace with hospital demand. All blood types are needed, but type O blood is in especially short supply. The supply of O-positive blood has fallen below a one-day supply, forcing the Red Cross to limit distributions to hospitals.

The Red Cross said extreme heat, poor air quality and widespread foodborne illnesses have contributed to lower donor turnout this summer.

“This summer has brought a number of unique challenges that have placed additional strain on our blood supply, creating growing concerns for hospitals and the patients who rely on lifesaving transfusions,” said Paul Sullivan, senior vice president of donor services for the American Red Cross.

The organization estimates that if three additional people donated at each blood drive this summer, it would help stabilize the blood supply.

Appointments can be made through the Red Cross Blood Donor App, at RedCrossBlood.org or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

As an incentive, donors who give through July 31 will receive a Fandango movie ticket by email (up to a $15 value), while those who donate Aug. 1-31 will receive a $20 Amazon gift card by email. Terms and conditions are available at RedCrossBlood.org.

Eligible donors generally must be in good health, meet minimum age and weight requirements, and present acceptable identification at their appointment. The Red Cross recommends completing the online RapidPass health questionnaire before arriving to reduce wait times.
