All are invited to participate in a celebration of African American artists, performers and writers at Piedmont Arts’ annual African American Read-In and Family Day on Saturday, February 19, from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Held in conjunction with the National African American Read-In established in 1990 by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month, the National Read-In and related events have reached more than 6 million participants around the world.

Sponsored by Carter Bank & Trust, the free event will feature a performance by Kuumba Dance Ensemble, Inc., drumming workshops, story time, crafts and a public read-aloud. The Martinsville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. will also host a book drive at the event. Guests may bring new or gently used books to donate to local preschools. Complimentary snacks will be provided. All ages are welcome.

Event Schedule:

11 a.m. – 12 p.m. – West African-inspired beaded jewelry craft, coloring pages and more
