Sheila G. Clark, a 29-year veteran of the Treasurer’s Office, has qualified for the ballot in the November election to succeed retiring Treasurer Cindy Dickerson.

After nearly three decades of service, Sheila G. Clark is running for the Treasurer’s post in November.
After nearly three decades of service, Sheila G. Clark is running for the Treasurer’s post in November.

Clark will face Kendall Davis in the general election. Dickerson, who has held the post for more than three decades, announced she will not seek reelection.

“I have proudly contributed in numerous capacities, including fulfilling essential duties in the absence of the treasurer,” Clark said. “My role has allowed me to gain deep institutional knowledge and a strong understanding of the responsibilities required to serve our community with integrity.”

She said Dickerson encouraged her to run. “I know all the day-to-day operations, and when she’s not here I’m in charge, so I really know the job,” Clark said.

Clark holds a Master Government Deputy Treasurer certification through a 15-year continuing-education program at the Weldon Cooper Center at the University of Virginia. Her experience includes customer service, staff supervision, daily payment collection, bank reconciliation, processing state transactions, and billing and collecting real estate and personal property taxes. She also has worked closely with state and local auditors.

“I also have a strong background in collections,” she said.

Clark said Dickerson and other staff members are excited about her candidacy.

“They are excited. There are some really good people in this office also – smart and with good customer service,” she said.

If elected, Clark said she will focus on improving efficiency and reducing wait times for taxpayers. “I know what needs to be done and when it needs to be done. If I have questions, I know whom to call to get the answers I need,” she said.

Clark plans to launch a Facebook page to keep voters informed about her campaign.

Also qualifying for the ballot is Shasta Carmichael, who will challenge incumbent Ruth Easley for the Martinsville Commissioner of Revenue post.
