Fire crews in Henry County battled a New Year’s Day blaze that claimed the life of a local woman.

Cynthia B. Robinson, 66, died Jan. 1, according to a release from Henry County Public Safety.

The Martinsville-Henry County 911 Communications Center received the call at 1:11 p.m. regarding a structure fire at 495 Wilson Avenue in Henry County.

Crews arriving at the scene found the single-story residence on fire. The home belonged to Peter and Cynthia Robinson, according to the release.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, and located a deceased woman in the bedroom of the home.

The Henry County Fire Marshal’s Office, with assistance from the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, is investigating the blaze, according to the release.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the fire was caused by a cigarette, the release stated.

The case is still under investigation pending the final report from the Medical Examiner’s office.

The Ridgeway Volunteer Fire Department, the Horsepasture Volunteer Fire Department, and the Henry County Department of Public Safety responded to the scene.
