Amanda Gray, Tourism and Marketing Specialist, was selected for the 2026 cohort of the Virginia Rural Leadership Institute (VRLI), the West Piedmont Planning District Commission (WPPDC) announced last week. The VRLI is the Commonwealth’s leading leadership development program dedicated to preparing current and emerging leaders from rural communities across Virginia.
Now entering its fifth year, VRLI brings together dynamic leaders from sectors such as economic development, education, agriculture, local government, healthcare, small business, and nonprofit organizations. Through immersive learning experiences and collaborative projects, VRLI equips participants with the skills, relationships, and insights needed to strengthen rural communities and advance economic opportunity throughout the Commonwealth.
Amanda Gray’s selection follows a highly competitive process, reflecting her commitment to promoting the West Piedmont region and supporting the growth and vitality of rural communities. As part of the 2026 cohort, Amanda will join leaders from across Virginia to participate in leadership development sessions, engage with local communities, and develop a Community Impact Project designed to make a tangible difference in her home region.
“I am very grateful to have been nominated for this cohort and selected after the interview process. I am looking forward to visiting different regions within Virginia and learning about projects and ideas that others have implemented in their communities to help them grow,” said Amanda Gray. “This is an exciting opportunity to bring back new insights and best practices to the West Piedmont region, and I look forward to collaborating with fellow leaders who share a passion for rural progress.”
The 2026 VRLI program will begin with its opening session in Southside Virginia, including stops in Danville and South Boston, and will feature immersive experiences in rural regions throughout the state. Participants will engage with local leaders, explore innovative community initiatives, and participate in sessions designed to strengthen cross-sector collaboration and rural systems thinking.
