A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help a Martinsville woman undergoing treatment for stage 3 triple-negative breast cancer.
The fundraiser was created earlier this month by Hannah Still to support her mother, Chastity Smith Eaton, who has been unable to work while receiving chemotherapy.
“She has been out of work for three months so far undergoing her first half of chemotherapy and still has three months left to go. Although chemotherapy is an important part of the treatment, it is not the end of her cancer journey,” Still wrote on the GoFundMe page.
After completing chemotherapy, Eaton is expected to undergo a mastectomy.
Still said the extent of the surgery will not be known until additional imaging is completed after chemotherapy to evaluate her response to treatment.
She said Eaton’s care will require multiple trips to Roanoke to coordinate treatment and is expected to involve several procedures, multiple hospital stays and a lengthy recovery.
“Throughout all of this, she is still caring for my two youngest sisters at home. Balancing the physical, emotional, and financial demands of cancer treatment has been an enormous challenge, and the upcoming surgeries will place an even greater burden on her. This has created a lot of uncertainty for our family, both emotionally and financially,” Still wrote.
Funds raised through the campaign will help cover living expenses, medical bills and other costs associated with Eaton’s treatment and recovery.
“Every donation, no matter the size, will make a difference in her life and help ease the burden she is carrying,” the GoFundMe page states.
As of July 23, the fundraiser had raised $6,250 toward its $7,000 goal through 38 donations.
