Kisha Shelton

Kisha Shelton, RN of Sovah Health – Martinsville was honored with The DAISY Award® For Extraordinary Nurses. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s programs to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day.

Shelton, who has worked in the med-surg unit at Sovah Health – Martinsville’s campus for 3 years, was nominated for the award by a patient and family member, who credit the nurse for being a shining star while making the patient feel comfortable and safe under her care. “We both appreciated her going above and beyond in providing care while being an advocate for my sister. It didn’t go unnoticed or underappreciated.”

Shelton has a special way of making her patients feel calm and at ease. She consistently visits and takes care of her patients, even after being given a new assignment. She goes out of her way to let them know she genuinely cares. Moments like this truly highlight what an extraordinary nurse Shelton is.

The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, CA, and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease.  The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.

“When Patrick was critically ill, our family experienced first-hand the remarkable skill and care nurses provide patients every day and night,” said Bonnie Barnes, FAAN, CEO and co-founder of The DAISY Foundation. “Yet these unsung heroes are seldom recognized for the super-human work they do.  The kind of work the nurses at Sovah Health are called on to do every day epitomizes the purpose of The DAISY Award.”

“It was my honor to present Kisha with the DAISY Award,” said Barbara Seymour, Chief Nursing Officer at Sovah Health – Martinsville. “Kisha is an exceptional nurse that goes above and beyond to care for every patient she is assigned to. The way she steps up and cares for her patients is truly remarkable. Kisha made a special impact on this patient and the family. This story highlights the amazing work Kisha does every day here at Sovah Health – Martinsville.”
