The Art of the Quilt
On display through January 9, 2021 • Piedmont Arts
Admission Free
Quilt artists from across the Southeast exhibit work in this biennial invitational exhibition, co-curated by master quilter Linda Fiedler and quilter Betty Blessin. Themed Anything Goes, this year’s exhibition commemorates the 12th anniversary of The Art of the Quilt. Virginia Foothills Quilters Guild on display in the Lynwood Artists Gallery.

 

Ansel Adams: Compositions in Nature

On display January 23 – February 27, 2021 • Piedmont Arts

Renowned for his photographs of the American western landscape, Ansel Adams is one of the most celebrated and influential American artists of the twentieth century. Ansel Adams: Compositions in Nature brings together over forty of his most beloved works and places them in context of the artist’s multifaceted career, in which he excelled as an artist, environmentalist, and musician. Additionally, rarely exhibited and unconventional photographs by Adams demonstrate the breadth of his professional and personal interests. On loan from Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

Jason Franklin’s work narrates the human condition from an American perspective. He brings to life everyday situations and feelings, like love, family, faith, dreams, and friendship, in extraordinary ways. Much of his work documents unique facets of American life and celebrate the indomitable spirit.

Christmas Tree Lighting

Thursday, December 3, 2020 • 5 pm • Gravely-Lester Art Garden

Admission Free

Fun for the whole family, the museum’s third annual Christmas Tree Lighting will feature a carol sing-a-long, complimentary snacks and hot chocolate, a take-home craft kit for kids and a visit from Santa. Just like the sculptures in its Art Garden, the museum’s Christmas tree will be a work of art. Created by Ian Hogg using more than 3,000 lights, the tree will be lit at sunset on December 3 and brighten the Art Garden through New Year’s Day. Guests are encouraged to practice social distancing. Masks required when not eating or drinking.

 

*The Roanoke Symphony Holiday Pops concert scheduled for Sunday, December 6 has been canceled.

 

Opening Reception: Ansel Adams
Friday, January 22, 2021 • 5:30 – 7:30 pm • Piedmont Arts

Admission Free

Join Piedmont Arts for an opening reception in honor of the museum’s new exhibits. Free and open to the public. Complimentary wine and light refreshments will be served. Live music by Lauren Luther. Limited Capacity. RSVP required by January 19, 2021.

VMFA on the Road: An Artmobile for the 21st Century
January 22 – 23, 2021 • Piedmont Arts
Virginia Museum of Fine Arts’ traveling art museum returns to Piedmont Arts. Tour the exhibition, A View from Home: Landscapes of Virginia, featuring paintings, photographs, woodblock prints, and engravings from VMFA’s permanent collection that represent various styles and periods. Featured artists include Adele Clark, Hullihen Williams Moore, George H. Benjamin Johnson, Miwako Nishizawa, and others.

Artmobile Family Day

Saturday, January 23, 2021 • 11 am – 1 pm • Piedmont Arts

Admission Free

Join Piedmont Arts for a special Family Day celebrating VMFA on the Road: An Artmobile for the 21st Century. Enjoy crafts, snacks and tours of Virginia Museum of Fine Arts’ Artmobile, a state-of-the-art traveling museum and art studio. Complimentary snacks. All ages welcome. Sponsored by Carter Bank & Trust.

Seniors are invited to paint together in the Piedmont Arts classroom. Sessions are self-guided and provide a space to socialize while creating artwork. Bring your own supplies. Non-members pay at the door.

Winter Barn Quilt Class
