D-Day remembered

Wreaths were to be placed Thursday, June 6, at Oakwood Cemetery in Martinsville on three markers honoring local men who died in the D-Day invasion and were buried in France. Here, Martinsville City Councilman Danny Turner (left) and W.L. Fowlkes of the Veterans Service Organization (VSO) ready flowers at the marker for Benjamin Kearfott, who was killed in the first wave of the invasion. The others honored with wreaths were R.B. “Crow” Williamson and Noel Washburn. Also at the June 6 program marking the 75th anniversary of the invasion. 9th District U.S. Rep. Morgan Griffith was to give a biography of the late Clyde England, who survived D-Day, to his family. The biography was entered in the Congressional Record.
