The Henry County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a motion on Tuesday to back needed heating and cooling upgrades at Fieldale-Collinsville Middle School. The board agreed to give the schools an additional $909,850 from local carryover funds to complete the project.

“The board remains committed to partnering with our schools on critical facility projects,” said Chairman Jim Adams. “This project is essential to maintaining a safe and effective learning environment. I appreciate the County Administrator’s leadership in helping secure an agreement that allows this important project to proceed. We’re glad to assist the school board by providing the resources needed to help bring it to completion.”

The county and its school system have an existing memorandum of understanding to split unexpended funds at the end of fiscal year. These funds, often from multiple cost centers, are then lumped together and “carried over” to the next fiscal year.

There was $1,405,975 in local carryover funds this fiscal year. The remaining $496,125 not committed to the project was appropriated to the county’s capital fund.

In other matters, the board:

  • Approved a resolution supporting the Community Development Block Grant application for a project to rehabilitate up to 11 low-to-moderate income residential houses in the Old Bassett Heights Road area.
  • Approved amendments to the bylaws for the Martinsville-Henry County 911 Joint Dispatch Center.
  • Approved the county’s participation in the Intergovernmental Agreement with the Virginia Department of Emergency Management to coordinate interstate and intrastate mutual aid.
  • Approved an additional appropriation of $17,124 received from the Circuit Court Records Preservation Grant program to preserve marriage bonds and order books dating back to the 1700s.
  • Approved the purchase of a fire truck from Municipal Emergency Services for the Collinsville Volunteer Fire Department and disbursed $683,292 to the department for the purchase.
