The Martinsville-Henry County Chamber of Commerce recognized several local business leaders and organizations during its annual Business Appreciation Dinner on May 13.
Award recipients were recognized for their professionalism and community involvement. They are pictured with Brenell Thomas, president and executive director of the chamber. See page 10 for photos.
The event also recognized graduates of the Leadership MHC program and introduced the chamber’s new 40 Under 40 awards.
The Small Business of the Year Award in Manufacturing was presented to Southeastern Wood Products owner Mike Grogan.
“Over the years, the business continued to evolve, expanding its capacity into producing plywood and hardwood frames, and continually diversifying its services to meet the changing needs of the marketplace,” said Joe Sumner, vice chair of economic development.
Bassett Office Supply received the Small Business of the Year Award in Retail.
“Today, Bassett Office Supply remains a family-owned business, jointly owned by Kim Boyd — daughter of founders John and Nancy Parcell — and her husband, Manly Boyd, who continues to guide day-to-day operations with a strong commitment to service, integrity and community,” presenters said.
The Small Business of the Year Award in Service was awarded to Hairston Funeral Home. Kerry G. Smith, president and owner, accepted the award.
“At its core, this business remains committed to one mission: to serve, to support, and to stand alongside neighbors in both times of sorrow and celebration,” presenters said.
Uptown Aesthetics & Wellness received the Martinsville Uptown Small Business of the Year Award. Joanna Carter accepted the award on behalf of the business.
“At its core, this company reflects a modern approach to service — combining expertise, innovation, and a personal touch to help clients feel confident in their own skin,” presenters said.
Joshua Stone, president of Stone Construction LLC and commander of American Veterans Post 35, received the Young Professional of the Year Award.
“When asked what accomplishment made him most proud over the past year, his answer was not about finances or growth statistics,” presenters said. “Instead, he spoke about helping a local family in need.”
Presenters noted Stone partnered with The Blood Connection to help a local family whose son requires ongoing blood transfusions due to a rare disease.
The Small Business Person of the Year Award was presented to Richard Sarver.
“Known throughout the region as a trusted leader, he leads with integrity, treats others with respect, and continually demonstrates a genuine desire to help others succeed,” presenters said.
Chamber President and Executive Director Brenell Thomas said she was pleased with the turnout for the event.
“I’ve seen some proud parents who have arrived and bragging already and grateful for their child, even though they’re adults, still being recognized for the work that they do in this community,” Thomas said.
Thomas also said the range of businesses recognized stood out.
“We have some companies being recognized tonight who have been around for 55 years, and then some who have been around for only three years,” she said. “Some of the award recipients were surprised to even be recognized. They do what they do because they love what they do, not for recognition.”
