Michael Caldwell had been out of work for about three months and was just getting ready to start a new job. His car needed a new radiator hose, so on his way to drop it off, he decided to stop and buy a 10X the Money ticket from the Virginia Lottery. That decision brought some much-needed luck his way.
Caldwell scratched his ticket and “started to see a few extra zeros.” Turns out, that ticket was worth $100,000.
“It still hasn’t sunk in all the way,” he told Virginia Lottery officials as he claimed his prize. “Just one ticket is all it takes.”
He bought his winning ticket at Circle K, located at 1560 Virginia Avenue in Martinsville.
The 10X the Money game (game #1990) is one of dozens of Scratchers available from the Virginia Lottery. Mr. Caldwell is the fifth person to claim the $100,000 prize in game #1990, which means two top prizes remain unclaimed. The chances of winning the top prize are 1 in 1,571,714. The chances of winning any prize in this game are 1 in 4.26.
Caldwell said he hopes to use his winnings to pay off some bills and fix his car.
Authorized by Virginia voters in a successful 1987 referendum, the Virginia Lottery generates more than $1.7 million per day for Virginia’s K-12 public schools. For more information, visit the Virginia Lottery’s Giving Back page, visit our website,
