A majority of the Patrick County Board of Supervisors on Monday supported a motion to not renew County Administrator Tom Rose’s employment contract.
The motion came after the board returned from a closed session meeting.
Dr. Clyde Deloach, of the Blue Ridge District, said the nonrenewal would be effective immediately, according to Jane Fulk, board chairman.
Rose did not attend that portion of the meeting and was not present when the motion was made.
Seconded by Denise Stirewalt, of the Peters Creek District, the motion was supported in a 4 to 1 vote, with Fulk voting against it.
“I thought he had cleaned up his act and I wanted to give him another chance,” Fulk said.
She did not elaborate.
In a related move, the board appointed Assistant County Administrator Geri Hazelwood to serve as interim county administrator.
In other matters:
Fulk, of the Dan River District, will serve as chairman of the board this year.
Crystal Harris, of the Smith River District, is vice-chairman.
When the board adjourned, applause erupted among residents in attendance.
