Joseph Chad Lockett, 40, has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of his estranged wife, Rhonda Hairston, also known as Rhonda Lockett, according to the Henry County Sheriff’s Office.

Lockett was taken into custody around 5:45 p.m. Monday after deputies, investigators and tactical personnel responded to 225 Nibblett Drive in Ridgeway following reports that he was inside the residence.
After an alleged brief standoff, Lockett exited the home with his hands up and was taken into custody without further incident. He is charged with first-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a violent convicted felon.
The charges stem from a homicide discovered two days earlier. Around 12:15 p.m. on Oct. 18, deputies responded to 1159 Garrett Road in Ridgeway after receiving an anonymous call requesting a welfare check.
When deputies arrived, they spoke with a 17-year-old resident who said his mother needed help. Inside the home, deputies found Rhonda Lockett deceased in a bedroom. Henry County Public Safety personnel confirmed the death.
Investigators worked throughout the weekend gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses and developing leads. Through the course of the investigation, Joseph Lockett was identified as the suspect in his estranged wife’s death.
“We are grateful for the assistance of our community and partner agencies in the swift apprehension of Joseph ‘Chad’ Lockett,” Sheriff Wayne Davis said. “Our prayers are with the family of our victim, Rhonda Hairston, during this difficult time.”
Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact the Henry County Sheriff’s Office at (276) 638-8751 or Crime Stoppers at (276) 63-CRIME (276-632-7463). Information leading to an arrest and conviction may be eligible for a cash reward.
