Tim Duffer, a veteran emergency management professional with more than 30 years of experience, will become Henry County’s new director of public safety effective Aug. 1. He will succeed Matt Tatum, who is retiring July 31.

Duffer currently serves as deputy fire chief for the Danville Fire Department, where he oversees the 911 communications center and manages accreditation. He has led federal grant efforts totaling over $1.5 million, modernized response systems, and played a key role in disaster recovery following Tropical Storm Michael.
“We are excited to welcome Tim to our leadership team,” said County Administrator Dale Wagoner. “His depth of experience in emergency response, public safety infrastructure, and strategic planning make him exceptionally well-suited to carry forward the strong legacy of service that Director Tatum leaves behind.”
Duffer has also led Regional One EMS, serving as its director and chief, while growing the agency’s workforce threefold, implementing 24/7 communications capabilities, and positioning the organization for acquisition through service innovation.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Duffer has a long record of volunteer service, including his time as Fire Chief of Blairs Volunteer Fire and Rescue. He also served on regional boards and committees supporting emergency protocols and legislative advancements. He holds a master’s degree in emergency management from Walden University and a bachelor’s degree in fire protection administration from Eastern Kentucky University.
“I am honored to serve Henry County in this role,” Duffer said. “Public safety is about more than emergency response. It’s about collaboration, preparedness, and community trust.”
