The Bulldog Beat is hopefully returning to a regular weekly routine after a two-week snow break for students!

Sixth grade homeroom reporters Emery Taylor, Miriam Carter, Adelaide Brent, and Mercy Moore; seventh grade homeroom reporters Jade Holland-Dallas, Shaurya Mahajan, Katie Wall, and Alanna Gerlach; and eighth grade homeroom reporters Maya Williams and Selena Stultz recently asked Martinsville Middle School students what they did during the two-week ice and snow break. Here are some of their responses.

Mr. Smith, the 8th grade Civics teacher, enjoyed the downtime by eating cookies and spending quality time with his pets. However, he admitted that he did get a little bored.

Nina Giles, 8th grade, enjoyed sleeping late and getting extra rest during the day. She spent time watching TV and being with her siblings. They even had a snowball fight and later enjoyed hot chocolate together. Nina said it was challenging that her family was unable to travel because of the weather.

Khloe James, 7th grade, enjoyed playing video games, going sledding, and playing in the snow. She helped her family with extra chores and enjoyed texting her best friend. Khloe spent most of her time with her siblings and pets. She enjoyed eating Takis but said she missed her friends and teachers.

Virgil Moore, 7th grade, said the best part of the time off was being able to sleep as much as he wanted. He also enjoyed eating cheese sticks while he was home.

Aiden Boaz, 6th grade, helped his family by shoveling snow. He also found time to play video games and go sledding. Aiden spent most of his time with family and especially enjoyed his Pop Pop’s homemade chili. He was glad to return to school because he was worried snow days might cut into summer break.

Brazen Bradner, 6th grade, enjoyed watching TV, playing video games, and sleeping while school was closed. She also enjoyed some good seafood. Brazen said she was worried she might forget things she had learned. She felt torn about the snow break because she missed her friends, but she did enjoy the extra sleep.

Kennedy Martin, 7th grade, spent her time watching TikTok, playing video games, and playing in the snow. She went sledding but said walking on the snow and ice was very challenging. Kennedy enjoyed spending time with her family and eating chicken alfredo.

Reginald Cobbs, 8th grade, enjoyed playing video games and relaxing at home. He even had a snowball fight with his dog and got to try the new Chipotle.

Cameron, 7th grade, said not being able to travel anywhere was difficult, but he enjoyed playing video games and eating French fries and chicken nuggets. He would not mind having more snow days.

Kayden Price, 7th grade, enjoyed playing in the snow, watching TV, and playing video games. His favorite activities were sleeping and being on his phone. He went sledding and had a snowball fight with his brother Kendall. His favorite treat during the break was coffee!

Christian Newsome, 7th grade, finished binge-watching Stranger Things. He said he enjoyed looking at the snow and joked that the world felt “upside down” while he was out of school. The most interesting thing he said he enjoyed during the break was gluten-free water!

Several homeroom reporters also shared updates about the first week back at school.

Hailey Coleman, 8th grade, reported that in Civics on Monday they began learning the steps of the lawmaking process. On Tuesday they finished the lesson and completed additional assignments. On Wednesday they learned the different roles of the president, including Commander in Chief and Chief Citizen, and continued studying those roles on Thursday. On Friday, they reviewed and took a very big test covering everything they have learned so far this year in Civics.

Mercy Moore, 6th grade, reported that in Career Investigations they worked on a project about sports. In math, she learned about circles. On Wednesday in history, they talked about what it would be like to live 200 years ago. In English, they finished reading Ghost.

Selena Stultz, 8th grade, reported that in Civics they studied the lawmaking process and took a quiz on the U.S. Constitution. They also worked on the roles of the president, and the class played a review game.

Jade Holland-Dallas, 7th grade, reported that in science they worked on worksheets and used Quizlet. They reviewed for their test and played Kahoot on their notes. They also completed a demonstration and reviewed questions they had missed.

Katie Wall, 7th grade, reported that in art they completed several pages for their Elements of Art book, including line, shape, color, and value. In Spanish, they learned how to pronounce different Spanish bird names, practiced vocabulary on Quizlet, wrote me gusta sentences, and were introduced to a new unit.

The Bulldog Beat is glad to be back and looks forward to sharing more student news and classroom highlights in the weeks ahead!
