Each year, the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) announces the schools and divisions selected to receive Virginia Board of Education’s Exemplar Awards through the Exemplar School Recognition Program.
The three categories of awards are 1) Highest Achievement Exemplar Award, 2) Continuous Improvement Exemplar Award, and 3) Innovative Practice Exemplar Award.
The schools and divisions were recognized in a report to the board at the June 18, 2020 meeting.
This year, Albert Harris Elementary School, Martinsville Middle School, and Martinsville High School received the 2020 Continuous Improvement Exemplar Award for a significant reduction in chronic absenteeism.
Albert Harris Elementary School, Martinsville Middle School, and Martinsville High School will receive a certificate from the Virginia Department of Education once VDOE staff are able to resume back at work. This is the second consecutive year Martinsville City Public Schools has had multiple schools receive an award. In 2019, Martinsville Middle School and Martinsville High School received awards.
“I am very proud of this great accomplishment and achievement by our students and staff,” said Martinsville Schools Superintendent Zeb Talley. “We want to make our schools inviting for our students and families. Student attendance has a great impact on student academic success! The Martinsville City Public School Division continues to improve and provide our community with quality educational opportunities.”
