Book lovers will have an opportunity to meet independent authors, browse locally made products and participate in giveaways during Books, Brews, and Boos, an event scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Spencer-Penn Center.
Amber McCain, owner of Haven Hollow, an independent traveling bookstore, is helping organize the event, which will feature 20 authors and vendors.
“I am an indie author myself, so I noticed that this community, this area, didn’t really have many book events, and I really wanted to bring something book-related to the community,” McCain said.
McCain, who has published two books for adults, Awakening the Dullahan and Restoring Destiny, said she initially kept a low profile as an author and did not begin participating in book signings until after publishing her second book.
Over the past year, McCain said she has become more outgoing, encouraged by support from the community.
“After publishing ‘Awakening the Dullahan,’ a switch kind of flipped. I can do this, what else can I do now?” she said.
McCain said preparations for Books, Brews, and Boos have gone well, with 20 vendors registered to participate.
“It’s going really well. We have 20 vendors signed up to be there. We are very happy with the array of vendors and authors that we have,” she said.
Participating authors include CJ Owens, Susan Patrick and Jess B. Moore. Other vendors include Grace and Mercy Art, Brightflame Paperworks and Once Upon a Blind Date.
The event will also feature two giveaways. One will be a drawing for a multibook series. The second, a “Vendor Passport” giveaway, will allow visitors to collect stamps from participating vendors and enter a drawing after completing their passports.
McCain said the community has been receptive to the event.
“The event was supposed to bring fun and joy to the community and a little bit of magic with each book,” she said.
Books, Brews, and Boos will be held from noon to 5 p.m. at the Spencer-Penn Center, 102 Spencer Penn School Road, Spencer.
Visitors can also attend the center’s Halloween Cabaret music revue later that evening. Doors open at 5 p.m., and the performance begins at 7 p.m. Tickets for the revue are $20.
