Gov. Abigail Spanberger is encouraging Virginians to support the state’s wineries and grape growers as the commonwealth observes Virginia Wine Month in October.
The observance comes after a difficult growing season for some Virginia vineyards. Late-season frost and freezing temperatures in March and April damaged crops across the state, prompting Spanberger to seek a federal disaster declaration from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
“This October is the perfect time to support the men and women who sustain this critical industry by visiting a Virginia winery or sharing a Virginia-grown bottle with friends and family,” Spanberger said.
Virginia is home to more than 350 wineries, cideries and meaderies and has more than 4,000 acres devoted to wine grapes, according to the governor’s Virginia Wine Month proclamation.
The annual statewide Virginia Wine Harvest Party will be held Saturday, Oct. 17, with wineries and other venues offering events throughout the commonwealth.
Information about participating wineries, events and other Virginia Wine Month activities is available at VirginiaWine.org.
