Hundreds of collectors turned out for the Sports Card and Pokémon Expo at the West Piedmont Higher Education Center on Oct. 3, keeping vendors busy throughout the day.
Organizers reported about 200 people were waiting when the doors opened, with Pokémon cards among the most sought-after items.
Local shop Rip-Em Cards helped organize the show with Jeff Gilbert.
“It’s been phenomenal. We have had a ton of people here today. And there’s more people coming in right now as we speak. It’s been a tremendous turnout. We’re really excited about it,” Gilbert said.
Visitors could buy, sell and trade cards with vendors. Tables extended into the hallway, where other items included figures, comics, vintage toys and 3D-printed goods.
Vendors came from around the region, with some traveling for several hours to participate. Sports cards also drew considerable interest during the show.
Gilbert said the steady crowds made for a tiring but successful day.
Starling Cards and Comics was among the local vendors participating. Employee Richard Johnson said the business had remained busy since the show opened.
“You know, I was worried we’d have more vendors than people, and we’ve had tons of people. It’s really been a good show, so we’re going to do it every time they come in,” Johnson said.
Organizers are considering bringing the expo back as a twice-yearly event. Those interested can follow Rip-Em Cards and Starling Cards and Comics on Facebook to keep up with the latest local card events.
