Michael Law was appointed Martinsville sheriff Monday, Aug. 31, 2026, by Circuit Court Judge G. Carter Greer following the sudden death of Sheriff Steve Draper on Saturday.
State law requires the city to appoint a sheriff to serve until a special election is held. Law has 19 years of experience with the Martinsville Sheriff’s Office.
“It is a bittersweet moment for me as I’ve always pictured this moment to take place with Sheriff Draper by my side,” Law said. “However, I look forward to building on the strong foundation he laid ahead of us, serving with integrity, professionalism, and dedication.”
A special election will be held Nov. 2, 2027, to elect a sheriff to serve the remainder of the current term.
