A Martinsville High School student is among the winners of the Virginia Council on Women’s 15th annual STEAM-H Essay Contest.
Kamori Dillard was named one of two winners from the Southwest/Southside Virginia region. She and the other contest winners were recently recognized by Gov. Abigail Spanberger and First Gentleman Adam Spanberger at the Executive Mansion.
More than 300 young women from across Virginia submitted essays for this year’s contest, which awards scholarships to high school juniors and senior girls planning to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics and health care.
The Virginia Council on Women established the contest in 2012. To date, the council has awarded more than $225,000 in scholarships through the annual essay contest.
Dillard was joined as a regional winner by Emmaline Dowell of Chilhowie High School.
Other winners were Clara Cho and Samiah Jeffries from Eastern Virginia/Hampton Roads; Grace White and Zakiyyah Foster-Rasheed from Richmond/Central Virginia; Margaret Thomas and Hannah Ahmad from Valley/Western Virginia; and Sienna Sung and Nardos Gelashe from Northern Virginia.
