The Henry County Public Service Authority (PSA) has awarded a $309,300 contract to C.W. Cauley and Son, Inc., for the installation of a water line extension to serve residents along Fairmont Drive in the Bassett community.
The contract was awarded following a competitive bidding process in which C.W. Cauley and Son, Inc., submitted the lowest bid. Funding for the project will come from existing funds in the PSA’s Capital Budget.
“This project is important not only because it expands access to public water, but because of the concerns residents have raised about the quality of the water from their wells,” said PSA Vice Chairman Marcus Stone. “As someone who works in healthcare, I understand the importance of having access to reliable, safe drinking water. At the same time, the PSA has a responsibility to be good stewards of the resources entrusted to us and to consider the costs associated with expanding infrastructure. This has been a long process of balancing those fiscal realities with the growing needs of the community, and I am proud that we are now in a position to move this project forward.”
The Fairmont Drive water line extension has been under discussion for more than a decade. In February, residents approached the PSA Board urging action on the project, citing deteriorating water quality from wells serving homes in the area. The project includes approximately 2,900 linear feet of new 6-inch and smaller water lines, along with appurtenances and other related work.
The construction phase is expected to take approximately six months. A definitive construction schedule will be established after a notice to proceed is issued and a schedule is agreed upon with the contractor.
The project represents a significant step toward addressing the concerns raised by residents while making use of existing Capital Budget funds rather than relying on outside funding.
The PSA will provide more information to residents as construction is set to begin, including general information about how to apply for a water tap and establish water service.
In other matters, the board adopted resolutions authorizing staff and legal counsel to proceed with condemnations for easements associated with both the Villa Heights Sanitary Sewer Project and the Horsepasture-Price Road Water Line Project. The board also received its routine monthly reports.
