The annual African American Read-In and Family Day will take place from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., at Piedmont Arts. Griot, or storyteller, Fred Motley will entertain with folktales, the Kuumba West African Dance Company will share traditional folklore through song, music, and dance, and Miss Commonwealth 2026 Victoria Howard will make a special appearance. Guests are invited to participate in a public read-aloud. Participants should bring a book, story, or poem by a favorite African American author to share with the group. Members of Piedmont Arts’ Teen Arts Council will provide free crafts for children, and the Piedmont Arts Guild provides door prizes. Snacks will be available. Foster Gallery Reception
Join Piedmont Arts and the Charity League of Martinsville and Henry County for a free reception celebrating students with work on display in the Foster Gallery from 4-6 p.m., at Piedmont Arts. The exhibit features work by students attending Carlisle, Fieldale-Collinsville, Laurel Park, and Martinsville middle schools. Music Night at Spencer Penn, with the White Oak Ramblers Bluegrass Band in the Alumni Hall. Gate opens at 5 p.m.; the band starts at 6:30 p.m. Admission is a $5 CASH donation. Concessions will be sold.

Before the internet, local residents had a myriad of ways to keep connected. Join MHC Historical Society Executive Director and former Martinsville Bulletin editor Holly Kozelsky for “Connected Community,” a look at the history of the area’s media. The program covers newspapers, radio, television stations, company newsletters and more. The program will be held at 3 p.m., at the MHC Heritage Museum, 1 E. Main St., as part of the Sunday Afternoon Lecture series.

The Martinsville-Henry County Lions Club regularly meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the Pacific Bay Restaurant, 530 Commonwealth Blvd, Martinsville.
Bassett Ruritan Club, 277 Philpott Dam Road, Bassett, hosts breakfast on the 2nd Saturday of each month, $9 for adults, and $4 for children under 12. All you can eat, sausage, fried bologna, eggs, cooked apples, sausage gravy, biscuits, made-to-order pancakes, coffee, and juice. Dine in or carry out.

Bassett Ruritan Club hosts Rook Music & More on Fridays from 10 a.m. – noon. Play Rook, work puzzles, make a craft and listen to a mixture of bluegrass, country & gospel music by different bands each week. Free, but donations will be used by the club to pay for electricity etc.
The Fontaine Ruritan Club hosts Bingo every Tuesday, 1903 Joseph Martin Highway, Martinsville. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and games begin at 7. Money from Bingo supports community service awards, scholarships, and other community efforts.
