Nine Danville residents and two from Henry County were charged in connection with an Aug. 12 incident in Martinsville, according to a release from the Martinsville Police Department.

Juma’Rius Rayquan Yarbrough, 19; David Gordon Ferrell III, 20; Kareema Rashannda Austin, 20; Yary Cruz Espana, 18; Davyion Lil Deejay Ferrell, 23; Aniya Shavon Carter, 19; Makayla Allie Hurd, 19; Shaniya Leatrice Hood, 19; Jade Nicole Mays, 21; Tatyuanna Alexius Grasty, 19, and Chauntel Kiera Ferrell, 18, were charged with malicious wounding by mob in connection with the shooting death of Crystal Galloway Jordan, 39, of Martinsville, according to the release.

Espana and Hurd are from Henry County, according to Martinsville Police Capt. Ben Peters.

The charges were filed in connection with an Aug. 12 incident in the 500 block of Forest Street, when authorities responded to a large disturbance. Upon arrival, officers discovered that Jordan had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

She was transported to SOVAH Martinsville Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

In the weeks following her death, city police detectives gathered evidence and conducted numerous interviews. Authorities alleged the investigation revealed that a large group of individuals had conspired to confront and fight a smaller group of Martinsville residents.

This group allegedly traveled to the 500 block of Forest Street and began assaulting local residents. During the altercation, firearms were brandished and discharged, ultimately resulting in Jordan’s death, the release alleged.

The investigation is ongoing, and more criminal charges are expected. This case remains under active investigation. If you have any information, please contact Lt. Richard Barrow at (276) 403-5458 or Crime Stoppers at (276) 63CRIME (276-632- 7463). Crime Stoppers is an anonymous tip line, and you may be eligible for a reward of up to $2,500.
