The MHC Pride Coalition of Martinsville-Henry County brought a dazzling display of talent and celebration to the city with Snow Queens & Disco Dreams, a drag show that filled Wild Magnolia’s to capacity. The event, which was organized after the cancellation of the Gay-la, featured drag kings and queens from across Virginia and was open to attendees of all ages, with those under 18 required to have a chaperone.
The enthusiasm for the event was evident as more than 100 people lined up outside, hoping to gain entry. Inside, every seat was filled, and the crowd eagerly awaited each performance. Due to overwhelming demand, many hopeful attendees were left waiting outside for an available spot.
Elizabeth Carter, a founding member of the coalition, helped organize the event and celebrated her birthday with the audience.
In an official social media post, the coalition shared its excitement about the event’s success. “Last night was a wonder to behold. Friends and family came together to celebrate our community to the point of us bursting at the seams the entire night long.”
The event gained significant attention after a viral social media post by Star News, drawing both local residents and out-of-town visitors eager to experience the show. The coalition assured those who couldn’t attend that more events would be planned in the future, giving everyone a chance to take part in the celebration.
The night featured a diverse lineup of drag performers, including Bromeo, Oliver This, Keii, Adoor Belle,
Jezzi Bell, Markie Jacob’s, Amazon Rome, and Miss Monica Rose.
Between performances, DJ Phishnet kept the energy high by playing popular songs during intermissions. Attendees eagerly tipped the performers, who moved through the room, showcasing their elaborate costumes and dance moves.
Security for the event was provided by Blu Tattoo Studio, ensuring that attendance remained within fire safety limits and that the crowd stayed safe. Wild Magnolia also crafted special themed drinks to complement the night’s festivities.
A $5 entry fee helped support the coalition’s mission of organizing future LGBTQ+ events in the area. The coalition has previously hosted community picnics, trash clean-up efforts, and Martinsville’s first Pride event in 2024 at Blu Tattoo Studio.
Organizers hope to make drag shows a monthly affair, reviving a tradition from Henry County’s past.
The coalition welcomes donations to support its efforts, and upcoming events will be announced on its social media platforms.
