The Col. George Waller Chapter of the Virginia Society Sons of the American Revolution and the Martinsville-Henry County Historical Society will participate in the Martin’s Station National Commemoration on Saturday, May 8 at 1 p.m.
There will be an onsite wreath-laying ceremony at the Gen. Joseph Martin Monument at the Historic Henry County Courthouse on 1 E. Main Street in Martinsville. Historical reenactors will attend, along with a cannon firing display.
Typically, the commemoration takes place at Martin’s Station National Park in Lee County, Va., but due to pandemic restrictions, the event has been taken up by the local chapter.
The original Martin’s Station played a relatively short but significant part in the history of southwestern Virginia and the early settlement of Kentucky. The station takes its name from Gen. Joseph Martin, the namesake for the City of Martinsville.
