Teddy Martin, II, who represents the Reed Creek District on the Henry County School Board, was among the Regional School Board Members of the Year announced at the Virginia School Board Association’s (VSBA) annual convention.
The award is presented in recognition of “boardsmanship qualities and active involvement in promoting student achievement,” according to a release.
Barbara Pittman, a member of the Dinwiddie County School Board, also was selected as a member of the year.
The award can be given to one school board member per VSBA region each year. This is the 19th year that awards have been presented, the release stated.
Additionally, delegates to the annual business meeting of the VSBA met to consider items proposed for next year’s legislative platform. New directors of the Association were elected. They will join the regional chairs elected at their Regional Meetings, as well the returning Regional chairs and committee chairs appointed by the president, on the 2021 VSBA Board of Directors.
Martin also was selected to assume the office of president-elect; Janet Turner-Giles of Nelson County to assume the office of VSBA president, and Rodney A. Jordan of Norfolk City to assume the office of past president.
“We are so proud to have Teddy Martin represent the Henry County Public Schools community as the Virginia School Boards Association Board of Directors President,” Henry County Schools Superintendent Sandy Strayer said. “His tireless dedication to students and teachers will certainly propel VSBA’s advocacy for public education to great heights.”
