Woman dies from gunshot wound,  man charged with second degree murder

A Bassett woman is dead, and a Fieldale man was charged with second degree murder, in connection with an alleged shooting incident Tuesday, according to a release from the Henry County Sheriff’s Office.

Krystal Anne McReynolds, 34, of McKinley Drive, Bassett, died Wednesday after suffering at least one gunshot wound to the face, the release stated.

She was found Tuesday night lying outside of a home located at 60 Fourth St., Fieldale when authorities responded to a call that an individual had been shot, according to the release.

The Martinsville-Henry County Emergency 911 Center received the call on February 18  at 9:48 p.m. Deputies arrived on the scene and located McReynolds at 9:52 p.m., the release stated.

McReynolds was transported to SOVAH Health Martinsville and subsequently transferred to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where she remained in critical condition while undergoing treatment for life-threatening injuries, according to the release.

While investigating the incident, authorities learned that McReynolds was pregnant, the release stated.

Henry County Sheriff Lane Perry estimated that McReynolds was 4- to 5-months into the pregnancy. The unborn child passed away, authorities have said.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the Western District of Virginia will be conducting an autopsy of McReynolds and her unborn child to determine the cause and manner of death, according to the release.

In addition to second degree murder, Thomas Christopher McDowell, 35, of 42 Badger Drive, Fieldale, also was charged with use of a firearm during the commission of murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in connection with the incident, the release stated.

He is being held with no bond in the Henry County Jail, according to the release.

The incident remains under investigation.

The Crimestoppers Program offers rewards up to $2,500 for information related to crime. The nature of the crime and the substance of the information determine the amount of reward paid.
